Veterinary Student Externship

Veterinary Student Externship Rotations

Third and fourth year veterinary students are invited to apply for an externship at one of the IVG/Ethos East Region hospitals.Extern pic

Duration and location: Veterinary student externships are generally 1 week in one department for 3rd year students and 1-2 weeks (1 or 2 departments) for 4th year students. Special exceptions may be made to the schedule based the applicant’s level of expertise and the staff’s availability to accommodate longer/shorter requests. Longer Preceptorships for students at school
s such as Ross, Western, U. Sydney and Lincoln Memorial are also possible. The majority of externships take place at Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital in Woburn, MA, but certain rotations are available at different hospitals. Please consult the location/department grid below for details.

Responsibilities: Student Externs gain experience working in a specialty department of a high-volume referral hospital. Working under the supervision of a specialist and closely with the technicians, the Extern will participate in rounds, patient treatments and diagnostics, and (when applicable) educational department meetings. The student will observe client interactions, learn about case management and the workings of a multi-department hospital.

Requirements:

  • Students are required to have liability coverage either through their veterinary or personal coverage through the AVMA’s student liability coverage program.
  • Externs must provide their own lodging and transportation, as hospitals are not located conveniently to public transportation and there is no on-site housing.
  • Externs can expect to begin work by 7 or 8 in the morning and, depending upon the department, may be called upon to put in a 12-hour day. As all our hospitals are 24hr/365 day facilities, Externs should expect to work on the weekends.

Education requirements:

  • Applicants must be third or fourth year students of accredited domestic or international veterinary schools.
