Truly remarkable every step of the wayWritten by Sarah Turner | Tewksbury, MA Hospital: Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital

Words can not express our appreciation for The Mass Vet Referral Hospital in Woburn during an extremely emotional and difficult time for myself and my husband. A very unfortunate and unexpected end to our dear Abbie’s life was not only trying, but a surge of emotions only pet lovers can truly understand. The moment we walked in the door all of the staff we had contact with were caring and sincere, understanding our worry and angst. The first doctor we met with, Dr. Kaitlin Fiske was gentle, caring and thoughtful when delivering the news that our baby girl was in trouble. She was honest and empathetic as she told us what no one wants to hear…the diagnosis of a malignant tumor along with several other organ impairments. A shock to us both for sure. When I asked to see the X-ray, as I am an xray technologist, she graciously walked me back to the digital screen to show me what they found. She gave us many options, one of which was euthanasia which we were clearly not ready to entertain and she understood whole heartedly. A long night and more tests would bring us to the next day which was beyond our comprehension. We received updates throughout the day that our girl was declining. Dr. Rebecca Davies took over our case and was beyond amazing. It takes a special kind of person to work with families in such a trying time. When one is told options but neither scenario is ideal, it makes a tough decision feel impossible. Rebecca was not only clear and straightforward with each option, her thoughtfulness, empathy and patience with myself and my husband during an extremely emotional and difficult time was greatly appreciated. We sat in that hospital for hours, trying to rationalize our decision to put our baby girl to rest. It felt like a tug of war, weighing each IMG_0262option over and over again. Lots of tears led us to the inevitable…we needed to stop the pain for Abbie and put our own selfishness aside. We sat with our little mama for quite some time, not ready for the final goodbye and Rebecca stayed late to see it through to the end. She didn’t push, she didn’t judge…she was supportive and caring every step of the way, assuring us she would’ve made the same decision. As sad as I was, I found comfort in her words and trusted her thoroughly. In those last moments to have someone so understanding guide you through such an awful situation is appreciated beyond words. Rebecca you helped us through one of the most difficult times in our life and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for being the one who was there. Your kindness and compassion meant more than you could ever know. Thank you for staying late for us and for all of your thoughtful and consoling words. You are an amazing person and I will be forever grateful to you for being with us til the end. I also wanted to thank the wonderful woman who came to us with healing stones…it was such a sweet gesture and I will carry it with me always. Our hearts are broken but I can’t say enough about your facility, your staff and the care we received. Truly remarkable every step of the way!
