Dr. Powers received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from Ross University in 1999.  After completing an internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at Purdue University, she practiced for a year in Emergency/Critical Care Medicine in Annapolis, Maryland.  In 2000 she went on to a surgical internship at Chesapeake Veterinary Referral Center.  From 2001-2003 she was the PennHIP post-doctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, School of veterinary medicine where she studied canine hip dysplasia.  She had been at Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine, where she completed a year of research in the Comparative Orthopedic Research Laboratory, a Small Animal Surgery residency, and served on the clinical faculty.  Dr. Powers earned board certification from the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (DACVS) in 2008 and in 2014, earned board certification from the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (DACVSMR).  She is also certified as a canine rehabilitation therapist (CCRT).

Dr. Powers attained the rank of Major in the Army’s Veterinary Corps and gained valuable experience working with and evaluating the DOD military, border patrol and TSA dogs. This led to her particular interest in many orthopedic procedures routinely performed today such as arthroscopy, cranial cruciate ligament repair (TTA, TPLO) and fracture repair. This has served her well as her passion and expertise in her personal life as an avid national agility dog competitor; her surgery skills have only been enhanced through her work with this new breed of canine athletes.

Her passion with surgery started with her desire to cultivate an expertise that would help her, both intellectually and technically, improve the well-being of an animal who is someone’s best friend.

In addition to her interest in canine sports medicine and rehabilitation, Dr. Powers has a particular interest in soft tissue surgery including oncologic, cardiothoracic, and reconstructive procedures. Dr. Powers feels it is important for the patient to use minimally invasive procedures whenever it is appropriate in order that the patient return to an improved lifestyle as soon as possible. Her tremendous interest in the advancement of pain management and rehabilitation therapy as well clearly demonstrates that she is extremely patient oriented. Dr. Powers has authored many journal articles and has presented on various surgical topics nationally.

Dr. Powers joined the IVG network of hospitals in October 2013.
