Dr. Purvis graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1983, and she received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1988.  She continued at the University of Pennsylvania to complete her internship; and, following her internship Dr. Purvis completed two years of residency training in Small Animal Surgery at the University of Tennessee. During her surgical residency, she realized her passion for care of the critically ill/ICU patients. Dr. Purvis shifted her focus and was accepted into the residency training program in Emergency and Critical Care at the Animal Emergency Center (Milwaukee, WI).

In 1994, Dr. Purvis earned Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (DACVECC). In addition to emergency and critical care, Dr. Purvis completed training at Colorado State University and was certified to perform veterinary acupuncture in 2005. She joined the IVG network of hospitals in August 2011.
