Enhanced Options for Diagnostic Imaging, now at IVG MetroWest

We are excited to announce the addition of a GE 4-slice Computed Tomography (CT) scanner at IVG MetroWest! With a CT scan, images are obtained 360 degrees around the patient in thin slices resulting in high resolution 3D images. These can be displayed in multiple planes, optimizing visualization of lesions and anatomic relationships. This allows doctors to assess extent and severity of disease and helps to facilitate biopsy and surgical planning.

Benefits of CT:

  • The ability to rotate the image 360 degrees and view it from multiple angles, or as a 3D structure, allows for better visualization of complex joints and structures such as the skull, nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, middle ear, spine, pelvis, shoulder, knee and elbow.
  • CT images allow doctors to thoroughly evaluate the size, shape, position and density of internal structures. If a medical problem is identified this information is used to determine the extent of the disease, or the exact location for biopsy.
  • CT is more sensitive for bone lysis, and is instrumental for early detection of aggressive nasal or bone disease.
  • In addition to neuroimaging, CT is routinely used for characterizing pulmonary disease, detection of metastases, and evaluation of cervical, or abdominal masses, aiding in the treatment and diagnosis of some types of cancer.
  • CT reduces the need for exploratory surgeries

Images provided by a quick and painless CT scan can make a difference between medical management of a problem and immediate transfer to surgery. Surgeries themselves can be shorter in duration and less invasive since the exact location and extent of a fracture orĀ  mass will have been identified before the first incision is made.
