Veterinary spinal surgery, or neurosurgery, is performed both by neurologists and surgeons. Unlike in human medicine, veterinary neurosurgery is not a specific sub-specialty.

The most common spinal surgery performed is the removal of herniated disc material causing spinal cord compression.

Other spinal surgeries performed include, but are not limited to:

• repair of spinal fractures
• removal of spinal tumors
• correction of atlantoaxial instability
• distraction-stabilization in dogs with Wobbler Syndrome
