Fund Raising for Firefighters Gathers More than Just MoneyMay 20, 2011

N. Andover, MA – May 20, 2011 – Bulger Veterinary Hospital, a 24 hour emergency, general practice and specialty referral hospital in North Andover has been raising money to provide local fire stations with oxygen masks for pets. The fund raiser began in March 2011 and had been scheduled to end in May, but the response from both staff and clients, and the friends and families of each, has been so overwhelming, the fund raiser is currently being slated to continue through June.

Sadly house fires and the devastation they cause are a fact of life. Veterinary emergency hospitals see the effects of house fires on family pets on a regular basis. The effects of smoke inhalation can be fatal if not treated quickly, yet fire stations are often not equipped to treat the animals they save from fires. The psychological implications of this lack of equipment on both the families and the firefighters can be demoralizing.

Bulger’s goal is to raise enough funds to donate 134 oxygen mask kits to fire stations in the towns and cities surrounding North Andover that have declared their need. The response has been both gratifying and overwhelming! To date Bulger has raised enough money to purchase over 75 oxygen mask kits.

Not content to simply donate $1, $5, or $10 towards the masks, individuals have also chosen to donate full kits for specific fire stations. Beneficiaries of these generous earmarked donations in Massachusetts include fire stations in Amesbury, Billerica, Chelmsford, Danvers, Dracut, Haverhill, Ipswich, Lawrence, Lowell, Methuen, Newburyport, North Andover, North Reading, Rowley, Tewksbury, Tyngsboro, West Newbury, Wilmington and Winchester. The plan had been to focus on Massachusetts, but our clients had other ideas and earmarked donations for fire stations in New Hampshire including the towns of Exeter, Manchester, Nashua, Newton, Plaistow and Salem.

What began as an internal fund raising effort expanded to include participation from the Methuen MSPCA and the Lowell Humane Society, both of whom have assisted by donating a raffle basket (Methuen) and hosting fund raising drives (Lowell) on behalf of Bulger Veterinary Hospital.

The doctors and staff at Bulger Veterinary Hospital are overawed by the outpouring of generosity both in terms of the financial commitments people have made, and the generous donation of time and effort. At Bulger Veterinary Hospital we are proud and deeply honored to be a part of such a compassionate, self-less community, and would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for the continued outpouring of support.

Interested parties may donate at Bulger Veterinary Hospital in North Andover; we accept cash and credit cards.
