Cats Rescued from Burning North Andover HomeJune 15, 2012

Cream Puff, waiting at Bulger, to go home

North Andover, June 15, 2012 – A fire, which started in the basement of the three family home in North Andover, claimed the lives of two of Ms. Lissa Hartigan’s three cats; Cream Puff received oxygen therapy briefly, and is resting comfortably at Bulger Veterinary Hospital in North Andover. Ms. Jennifer Poole’s cat Mittens was also rescued from a second apartment.  Her condition is much improved following oxygen therapy, thoracic radiographs and fluid therapy. Firefighters on the scene were unsuccessful in their efforts to resuscitate one of Ms. Hartigan’s three rescued cats. Thankfully, there were no human injuries or fatalities.

Drs. Andrew Landerville and Emily Cottam were on hand at Bulger Veterinary Hospital to treat both rescued cats. Under normal conditions both cats are doing well enough to be released, however as both owners are certainly under significant stress due to the circumstances, both Cream Puff and Mittens will be staying at Bulger until owners Hartigan and Poole are settled and able to bring them home.  “We understand the traumatic nature of this crisis and are grateful to be able to assist our community members in their time of need”, said hospital manager Stephen Isherwood.

Thanks to the generosity of North Andover residents during a 4th of July 2008 fundraiser, firefighters were able to give all the rescued cats oxygen on the scene, using masks purchased by Wiggles and Jiggles Pet Care,  of North Andover.

Bulger Veterinary Hospital provides 24 hour emergency and critical care, 365 days per year to dogs, cats, small mammals and reptiles. We wish all the families involved all the best as they strive to recover a sense of normalcy and resettle themselves, and we thank the firefighters and rescue services for their tireless efforts on behalf of these families and all families in North Andover.
